Welcome from the Director

Headshot for Dr JohnsonInherited muscular diseases are some of the rarest genetic conditions in medicine. Many are progressive and may cause early mortality — this means about half of our patients are children, so we understand the urgency in developing cures.

At the Center for Inherited Myology Research (CIMR), scientists and clinicians are at the forefront of creating innovative, life-changing treatments for these devastating diseases. We are proud to serve the broader community of genetic muscular disorders, with patients from across the globe traveling to Richmond, Va. to receive treatment and participate in groundbreaking clinical trials.

As the center grows, so does the greater scientific understanding of inherited muscular diseases and the opportunity to improve patient outcomes. With a collaborative, synergistic spirit in the lab and in the clinic, our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to creating a better future for patients and their families.
