About the Wellstone Center
In partnership with the University at Albany, researchers at VCU’s Center for Inherited Myology Research will receive $6.5 million over five years to establish a Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Specialized Research Center. This collaborative center will leverage the two universities’ combined expertise in myotonic dystrophy, which is the leading form of adult-onset muscular dystrophy in the U.S.
Established by the National Institutes of Health in 2003, Wellstone Centers are hubs at universities across the U.S. dedicated to collaborative research on various forms of muscular dystrophies. The centers provide training and resource cores and aim to accelerate progress toward effective treatment for these genetic diseases.
